Optimize Pages

There are four types of Optimize Pages recommendations; striking distance insights, content decay, lost top rankings, and important pages.

Striking Distance Insights

Striking distance refers to rank position in Google (4 to 20) as they are very close to getting into the top 3. MarketMuse helps you identify and address this issue to maintain your page’s performance.

Identifying Striking Distance Insights

  1. Striking Distance Insights List: In this list, pages with the highest potential gains are listed at the top.
  2. Business Alignment Check: Assess each item in the list to determine its continued importance and priority regarding your business goals.

Evaluation Process

  1. Consider Search Intent: Put yourself in the shoes of a user searching for this topic. What information are they likely seeking? Does your top-ranking URL fulfill that intent? (use X-Ray SERP in the action bar)
  2. Topic Analysis: Analyze each topic to determine if it’s a:
    • Direct Match: The topic is the main focus of the top-ranking URL. Continue optimizing your page for this topic to maintain relevance.
    • Adjacent Topic (Expand): The topic is related to, but not the primary focus of, the top-ranking URL. Enhance your existing page with a paragraph or section thoroughly covering the adjacent topic.

Optimize or Expand

Click the Optimize Page & Topic icon in the Action Bar to send it to Optimize so you can:

  • Optimize the page for the chosen topic, or
  • Add a paragraph or section. Use the topic model to ensure you create a comprehensive section, ignoring the Content Score and Word Count targets.

Content Decay

Content decay refers to the gradual decline in organic search traffic and rankings a webpage experiences over time. MarketMuse helps you identify and address this issue to maintain your page’s performance.

Identifying Decaying Content

  1. Content Decay List: In this list, pages with the most significant traffic loss are listed at the top.
  2. Business Alignment Check: Assess each item in the list to determine its continued importance and priority regarding your business goals. 

Evaluation Process

  1. Prioritize Topics: For important pages, click the “Prioritize Topics” icon in the action bar. This will display the topics the page ranks for, along with their current search performance.
  2. Topic Analysis: Focus on topics with declining rankings. Analyze each topic to determine if it’s a:
    • Direct Match: The topic is the main focus of the URL. Continue optimizing your page for this topic to maintain relevance.
    • Adjacent Topic (Expand): The topic is related to, but not the primary focus of, the top-ranking URL. Enhance your existing page with a paragraph or section thoroughly covering the adjacent topic.
  3. Assess Cluster: Click the “Assess Cluster” icon in the action bar to check for competing pages.

Optimize or Expand

Go back to All Inventory. Click the Optimize Page & Topic icon in the Action Bar to send it to Optimize so you can:

  • Optimize the page for the chosen topic, or
  • Add a paragraph or section. Use the topic model to ensure you create a comprehensive section, ignoring the Content Score and Word Count targets.

Lost Top Rankings

Lost top rankings refers to the decline in Google ranking between inventory updates. MarketMuse helps you identify and address this issue to improve your page’s performance.

Identifying Lost Top Rankings

  1. Lost Top Ranking List: In this list, those with the biggest loss in estimated traffic appear at the top of the list.
  2. Business Alignment Check: Assess each item in the list to determine its continued importance and priority regarding your business goals. 

Evaluation Process

  1. Topic Analysis: Analyze each topic to determine if it’s a:
    • Direct Match: The topic is the main focus of the URL. Continue optimizing your page for this topic to maintain relevance.
    • Adjacent Topic (Expand): The topic is related to, but not the primary focus of, the top-ranking URL. Enhance your existing page with a paragraph or section thoroughly covering the adjacent topic.

Important pages are those that have high Page Authority targeting terms with substantial monthly search volume. MarketMuse helps you identify and identify and maintain the performance of these pages.

  1. Important Pages List: In this list, those pages with the highest Page Authority appear at the top of the list.
